HELLO ALL! Uh, welcome to herbabykicks (please put aside whatever ridiculous notions you have about this name, I like it and that should be enough for everybody). So, I haven’t had a blog for communications ever since com101 but I’m pretty sure I’ll get the hang of things after awhile so pardon the irregular posting.
Introduction to the internet! Being technologically inept, I never thought that I would be taking any course remotely related to computers, IT and what goes with it, but I guess I have to learn about some IT related stuff sooner or later if I want to survive in this millennia.
Anyway, as we had our first lesson, I think something that really stayed in my mind was how fast technology develops and moves. It has only been around 50 years give or take, that the internet was first conceived and today, it has become indispensable to our daily lives. From its early purpose of national security, today, the internet is multi-purposed and has many advantages. While the technical stuff does not really appeal to me, it still amazes me that there are people with such brillant minds that manages to make sense of everything and piece together the internet. (also wish they would send someone to tell me why my laptop keeps shutting down ))): )
For most of us living in this digital age, it is almost inconceivable to think of what it would be like to live without the internet. The internet has certainly become indispensable to our daily lives. Anyway, I’m sure most of you have heard by now that Google might pull of out China. I was reading up on it and I found this particular article by the New York Times that highlighted the uncertain future of the internet in China. The link is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/17/world/asia/17china.html .
In summary, the article states that out of the affluent and educated population that uses Google in China, some of them might rise up and question the government's policies and the Chinese government could stand to lose their support. This thereby might affect the future of the chinese party and perhaps the rest of the world in turn as China is a country to be watching. The world sits in anticipation of the events that are to unfold: Who will rise up to be the next leading search engine in China if Google pulls out? What will the reactions of the chinese citizens be?
Speaking of which, this reminds me, my favourite internet advantage has to be the fact that we can appeal to the masses. Therefore, if you can afford it, please donate time, money or prayer for the Haiti earthquake victims!! So tell me, what is your favourite internet advantage?
